Half Moon Bay High School Named to Advanced Placement School Honor Roll

HMBHS recognized for student success in Advanced Placement program while broadening access.

Half Moon Bay, California, November 6, 2023 – College Board has announced that Half Moon Bay High School (HMBHS) has been named to the 2023 Advanced Placement® Program (AP®) School Honor Roll, earning Silver distinction for its progress.

The AP® School Honor Roll recognizes schools whose AP programs are delivering results for students while broadening access to more students. Schools earn this recognition annually based on criteria that reflect a commitment to increasing college-going culture, providing opportunities for students to earn college credit, and maximizing college readiness. Half Moon Bay High School’s Class of 2023 had 54% of seniors who had taken at least one AP exam during high school, 39% of seniors scoring three or higher on at least one AP exam, and 19% of seniors who took five or more AP exams. As a result, HMBHS received AP® Honor Roll recognition.

The Advanced Placement Program at Half Moon Bay High School offers 19 distinct AP® courses spanning across 29 sections and 16 teachers. Meanwhile, HMBHS students are also provided with the opportunity to take any of the 38 AP subject exams, regardless of whether or not the class is offered at Half Moon Bay High School.

“Our AP program provides challenging and rigorous coursework in a supportive environment, allowing our students a chance to potentially earn college credit and placement while also helping them with today’s competitive college admissions,” said Andrew Boysen, Principal of Half Moon Bay High School. “Our staff and students have shown that we can expand access to these college-level Advanced Placement courses and still achieve high performance, and we are delighted that HMBHS has been honored by the College Board.”

College Board’s Advanced Placement® Program (AP®) enables students to pursue college-level studies—with the opportunity to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both—while still in high school. Through taking AP courses in up to 38 subjects, each culminating in a challenging exam, students learn to think critically, construct solid arguments, and see many sides of an issue—skills that prepare them for college and beyond.

Register for AP Exams by logging into myap.collegeboard.org

Your teacher will provide you with a join code to access AP Classroom. Once logged in, then you select whether or not you are going to take the AP Exam.

Fees:

Please note that College Board will charge the following fees:

$40 late registration (if you register for the exam between 10/01/2024 and 02/28/2025; late fees are nonrefundable)

$40 cancelation (if you cancel your exam after 09/30/2024, including the day of the exam)

Fee Reduction:

If you feel you qualify for a fee reduction, contact Ms. Tower for the AP Fee Reduction Form or download it here. Please refer to the instructions on the form for how to properly complete and provide necessary information. The AP Fee Reduction form is due to Ms. Tower by 09/23/2024 by the end of the school day. There will be no exceptions made to the deadline.

This AP program challenges students academically and prepares them to take AP tests that allow them to earn college credits while in high school.
