COMMUNITY SERVICE

As part of Half Moon Bay High School's graduation requirements, students must complete a minimum of 35 hours of community service (or approved equivalent). While students are given four years to complete this graduation requirement, it is recommended that students begin long before their senior year so that they can include it on their college and scholarship applications.

The Community Service Form is required to authorize and record community service hours. This form includes:

  • A parent release agreement authorizing the student to perform community service. This must be filled out and SIGNED BY A PARENT/GUARDIAN.
  • A contract with information about the agency for whom a student is performing community service. This must be filled out and SIGNED BY THE AGENCY SUPERVISOR
  • A Timesheet for recording hours worked and the job supervisor's approval. This must be SIGNED BY THE STUDENT AND INITIALED BY THE JOB SUPERVISOR

Community Service Form should be turned in to the student's current Social Studies teacher as hours are completed. Parent and agency information must be filled out completely for each timesheet submitted.

Please note, community service is a requirement that must be fulfilled to graduate from Half Moon Bay High School; it will not factored into the Gov/Econ course grade. Students receiving poor or unacceptable evaluations will not be considered to have fulfilled the service requirement for graduation.

Community Service Rules

  • Students may record community service hours from the first day of school Freshman year to their Senior Year, deadline to be established by their Social Studies teacher.
  • Community service must be a performed for a non-profit agency.
  • Students may not receive pay or other compensation for community service work.
  • Community Service hours will not be counted if they take place during a regular school day, even if a student is excused from school during that time.
  • Submitted Community Service Forms must have the Parent Release and Agency Contract sections completely filled out and signed.
